New Welsh Housing Quality Standard 2023

RHE Global are delighted to draw your attention to an announcement by the Welsh Government on 24 October 2023 concerning the introduction of the new Welsh Housing Quality Standard 2023.

As lead consultants, RHE Global worked for two years advising Welsh Government on the technical criteria that underpin the new standard.

Climate Change Minister Julie James described the ‘bold and progressive’ new benchmark as one that will see the biggest changes to social housing standards in more than 20 years, and ‘better reflect changes in the way people live, work and feel about their homes’. 

Throughout the project RHE worked closely with the Welsh Government team, advising on all aspects of the new guidance, including building and fire safety, decarbonisation, energy efficiency and affordable warmth. The requirements also introduce a range of improved measures designed to further protect the wellbeing of social sector tenants in Wales; these relate to housing health and safety, dampness and mould growth, floor coverings and water sustainability as examples. Extensive sector-wide engagement and consultation, as well as industry-specific focus groups, were undertaken during the course of the two-year project.
