Recognising Domestic Abuse

Recognising Domestic Abuse

Dr Kelly Henderson is the founder of the not-for-profit organisation Addressing Domestic Abuse, winner of 24Housing’s ‘Housing Professional of the Year’ 2018, and founding board member of Women in Social Housing (WISH), and we’re really proud to be running our first session of her training course, Recognising Domestic Abuse, on 12 December 2023.

With new standards likely placing greater responsibility on providers, there is even more reason to become familiar with protocols, guidelines and support available when identifying/responding to those in need. Consequently, Dr Kelly has written a recent article, with Anna Bennett, partner at Devonshires Solicitors, on housing providers' responsibility in this area, sharing best practice when it comes to domestic abuse policies for such organisations.

To deliver a more comprehensive understanding, however, we have worked with Dr Kelly to build a broad course that brings you the following guidance:

  • The definition in accordance with the Domestic Abuse Act 2021

  • Physical, sexual, emotional, violent, threatening behaviour, coercive and controlling behaviour and economic abuse

  • A child’s perspective

  • The extent of domestic abuse in the UK, plus statistics for men and women based on their experience

  • The physical, human and emotional cost

  • How to spot potential signs of domestic abuse and provide reassurance if a member of the public makes a disclosure

  • Being conscious of possible concerns during telephone calls, as well as recognising red flags in a domestic situation when visiting a property

  • Being able to raise any concerns with confidence

  • The process of reporting a concern, through to how it is actioned

  • A look at the organisations that provide support.

Take a look at RHE Global Training for full details and to book your place. For further advice and guidance, Dr Kelly has filmed a webinar as part of our RIAMS Community Safety series around domestic abuse and housing. Access to this is available for all subscribers to RIAMS Community Safety and The Noise App. Should you require more information on how to access these training webinars, please contact [email protected].
